Quarantine Effects

Things like graduation parties, weddings, weekend gatherings–even funerals–that many associate with family and feel are missing in recent months, were never really part of the EV kids’ lives.

Absence Makes The Heart Grow Fonder

“Oooooh, yeah, a cheeseburger…” or “I can’t wait to see my daughter!” These, or some variations thereof, can be heard on nearly every short-term missions return trip to the United States. There is something about being away from our comforts, that makes us hunger for the things we left behind

Arrival Rewind

To be the head of a household or family is no small task. Yet, many of the eldest siblings who arrive at our door, have been just that, despite being merely children themselves.

ISO: The Qualities of Christ

One of the most admirable qualities of Jesus is His sacrificial obedience to His father in reaching toward the poor, the overlooked, and ignored. He was the perfect example of how we as Christians can follow in opening our hands willingly. This is the heart of the young-adult national and international missionary at Living Hope.

Greater Harvest

The ministry institute has recently added an even greater level of intentional training and commitment to excellence in pursuit of Christ.

Wedding Bells

In November 2019, Miguel married Angelica Reyes, a young lady from a small town three hours away. Her journey to EV was quite different than his.

San MartÍn Esperilla

To walk in others’ shoes is an easier task said than done, but isn’t that just what Jesus did when He came to this earth? Did He not walk in human sandals, among mire and dirt, among sadness and brokenness, to reach down, wash our feet, and walk with us?

25 Years: Just Getting Started

When Jerry McNally was 37 years old he had a soul-searching decision to make. What we see today as a robust, multi-faceted ministry, was just a fresh idea. With a handful of boys living in their home, he felt the weight of a decision that could absorb the rest of his life. It was a decision to pursue what he felt God had laid on his heart as The City of Hope, where much of what you see today was only a dream. Could such a vision of an orphanage, school, ministry institute, church, clinic, and more come together under his watch on a single campus in Mexico?

Learning to Love & Be Loved!

Behind the toothless grin is a 5-year-old eager to learn. True to his age, Hansel (lower right) has dreams of being a policeman, but it is accompanied by an even grander vision: “I want to take care of the people I love.”

Letting Go

When we are faced with hardship, we have a choice. As we run our race in this life, we must run with everything we’ve got. Through the years, we have seen with our own eyes many incredible transformations of young people who have overcome their pasts and whose today is a miracle. A young lady who came to live at Esperanza Viva in her earliest years of life once opened up about her journey.

Love Covers a Multitude of Risk Factors

As you become familiar with the kids of Esperanza Viva, you may see one or more of the following icons indicating their specific circumstances.

25 Years: The Cornerstone

Starting a youth home for at-risk children sounds like a noble venture. It can even succeed with dedication, focus, and God’s favor. But what if we took this calling to the next level—to impact an entire generation for Christ? That is why we are so committed to going a step further—training young people to serve the Lord beyond the secure walls of our campus, to a city and world in need of the hope that endures.

How do you do this?

Back in 2007, a highly-regarded psychologist visited Esperanza Viva. Standing in the courtyard, tears streamed down his face while children swirled and laughed around him, virtually oblivious to the weeping visitor. Jerry (McNally) saw his response and quickly came to him and asked if he was okay. The doctor asked Jerry, “How do you do this?”

25 Years: Ministry Milestones Part 1

This year marks our 25th anniversary as a ministry; we look back in wonder at the faithfulness of God to us and the children over the years.

Who are They? What is Abundant Life?

Jesus came for the sake of us all. We are all the “THEY” for whom He came to offer life—eternal and new. Throughout Scripture, Jesus repeatedly shows care for the least fortunate. Living Hope International has taken His love for the least and made it our mission.

Missionary Spotlight Marty and Mary Madsen Return to Puebla!

Marty and Mary Madsen have served the Lord faithfully with their many talents as part of the Living Hope team of missionaries for more than 18 years. We are excited to report that after several years serving the ministry from the United States, they have returned to the mission field in Puebla, to serve with as much passion as ever!

Thoughts from Jerry & Susy

Whether it’s been a while, or you’ve never visited Esperanza Viva (EV) in Mexico, one of the things you may quickly notice is an incredible amount of activity. Seeing in person the various and distinct functions of the youth home, the school, the school of ministry, the church, and short-term mission teams can be quite eye-opening.

Rescuing & Training the Next 500 Children Starts Now!

You’ve likely heard the movie quote and cultural cliché, “If you build it, they will come…” At Esperanza Viva, the reality is “they” are already coming and we now need to “build it” to fully embrace the growth and momentum. “They” are the young adult La Viña students from all areas of Mexico, the US, and other nations, coming to EV, hungry to learn and establish a faith foundation for ministry service. After La Viña, the next step for many of these young people is to join our dynamic team of supervisors and to fill other key full-time staff positions. “They” are also short-term missions teams and visitors, coming to taste and see what God is so freely pouring out over the LHI ministries in Mexico.

Reaching More

In Mexico alone, there are an estimated 100,000 children at risk, teetering on the edge of, or tumbling through, the jagged cracks of a broken system of social work and despair. Together, our ability to intervene and offer hope is on the rise as we expand our capacity to be part of the solution. So, how are we putting to use the experience we’ve gained over the past 25 years and the 500 children we’ve given refuge? What are the keys to the next 500? The next 5,000?

Church Partnership

Is the plight of orphans and the most vulnerable what God has impassioned your heart with? Is a well-discipled next

The Next Leg

Lately, more so than ever, I am excited about how God has positioned us to be effective for His purposes. For years, I believe we have been in preparation mode: faithful with our present-day but expectant to see God’s plans unfold in front of us. As we now reflect on how we have been prepared and equipped, it’s like all things are coming into focus.

Local Action, Global Traction

Has your heart been touched—and perhaps your life changed—thanks to what God is doing through Living Hope International? Don’t keep it to yourself!

Trafficking and Sexual Exploitation: Part 3

Esperanza Viva was founded in response to the lie “these kids are hopeless.” Many of the children we take in are orphans but not always in the way you would think. Sex trafficking is Mexico’s second most lucrative form of organized crime and according to many sources, only rising and claiming more lives.

Nations School Dedication: And Hope Does Not Disappoint

After years of trusting in God’s timing, Nations School is a dream come true.
As the blue silky ribbon was cut to pieces, cheers erupted straight from the hearts of the hundreds of children, staff, and visitors assembled to dedicate Nations School to the purposes of the Lord.

Forgiveness Matters

At some point in our lives, we all come face to face with the choice, or rather need, to grant forgiveness. For Carolina, it was her father… or lack thereof. The echo of his spotty and abusive presence reverberated daily through her heart and mind. In her formative and elementary years, she witnessed her father having only one emotion: anger, and it was always directed towards her and her family…

Building a Church and a Building Too

Long before the McNallys began the ministry to abandoned children in the big city of Puebla, their hearts were burdened to reach “the least of these” in the mountainous region of the state of Oaxaca. A church in Itundujia, high in the mountains, is one of the fruits of their church-planting labor in the 1980’s. This church…

Shaken Together

September quakes reunite a family of EV Children
When chaos hits, it is our natural instinct to run, hide, take cover. Such was the case in September of 2017 when a powerful earthquake struck the people of Mexico. All around us there was panic, lines of communication were lost, and the media was flooded with images of destruction. However, we know that God has a way of working things together for good…

Putting the Y in Missions

In 2017, as dialogue began with an active LHI advocate and YMCA employee, about the prospect of leading a team from a Wisconsin YMCA to visit Esperanza Viva (EV) for a week in Mexico, both parties were intrigued. What a great opportunity to connect folks in the United States with the life-changing work happening at EV.

Matamoros

These are exciting times for Esperanza Viva-Matamoros. In April, a couple from our Puebla campus moved there to take on the leadership of the campus

What Am I Missing?

The desire of our ministry is to see hearts restored and we are aware that healing and restoration take time, especially in respect to families. We reflect on the children’s journeys and find hope in the truth that they have come a long way from their first day with us.

A Week of Hope

We strive to ensure our visiting missions teams have a profound and lasting encounter with God. We want to get out of the way and allow what God has planned for each individual to take place; the results are humbling and inspiring.

Filling Voids

We believe that the only thing that can truly transform the lives of the children in our care is the love of Jesus. We regularly witness this genuine, unbiased, unconditional love poured out into the children through the many visitors and sponsors who positively impact their lives.

One God, Many Ways to Serve

Spending time with the children of EV is neither charity nor obligation, but rather a great opportunity for God to demonstrate His plan of redemption in the purest and most raw examples on earth: people loving one another. When we witness orphaned and at-risk children living joyfully in the refuge of the God who loves them, we see more clearly than ever His plan for salvation and purpose in our own lives. If you haven’t yet visited–the time has never been better.

Reach

The word “reach” can sum up one’s current sphere of influence, but also speaks of the capacity to become greater, challenging one to extend even further. How have you been reached? Has God touched your life and His Gospel penetrated your heart, life and worldview? Our logo depicts a two-way reach, thus, our vision is a call for us all to understand our need for help and rescue, yet be ever watching for the chance to help others. We can reach down ourselves to answer a desperate plea from those God has put in our path.
