Putting the Y in Missions

What the C in YMCA can look like

In 2017, as dialogue began with an active LHI advocate and YMCA employee, about the prospect of leading a team from a Wisconsin YMCA to visit Esperanza Viva (EV) for a week in Mexico, both parties were intrigued. What a great opportunity to connect folks in the United States with the life-changing work happening at EV. It is always our hope that guests would have open hearts, open minds and that each person would have a meaningful connection with God, the children of EV, our selfless staff, and the vibrant Mexican culture.

It was indeed life changing for the team of 11 members, from various faith backgrounds–several still discovering what faith can even be–as they learned of the tragic backgrounds of the delightful children swirling around them and enjoying their company. According to Bruce Osborn, YMCA staff pastor, and first-time visitor to EV, “It was truly a life-changing experience for our whole team. It is our hope that a trip like this is just the first of many missions trips, introducing our YMCA members to serving here in Mexico and beyond. We’ll be back!”

As we witnessed this group serve and play, laugh and cry, we consider it mission accomplished.
